Our MCREST hotel opens again next Sunday, February 26th, for seven nights to provide suitable shelter for the homeless in Macomb County. Organizing and operating a hotel, whether the guests are paying customers or not, expects a good deal of hospitality and the involvement of a whole host of people. Guests must be greeted and checked-in; they must be assured that they are safe and secure, during the evening, and overnight while asleep. Food needs to be obtained, prepared, served and suitably stored each day - for an evening meal, a simple breakfast most days, and a substantial hot breakfast on the weekend, as well as a sack lunch and a snack to last throughout the day, while at work, actively looking for work, or running the necessary errands to get 'back on one's feet.' Until they do, they often need help with transportation to get from St. Lucy's to an appointment, work, or to nearby bus transportation needs,.
Hospitality is also extended each evening by engaging the guests in various planned activities like cards or boxed games, a craft project, a simple conversation and TV watching.
Volunteers as well as food and gift donations must be checked and logged-in so that MCREST gains credit from the State of Michigan for all the volunteer hours of service we can provide.
All the Guest Services areas can sitll use additional help. Sheep still remain on the MCREST hillside. Whether you can offer an evening, a morning, or a few of each throughout the week; whether you can shop, or run errands, everyone can do something for MCREST at St. Lucy's. You'll gain far more than you are being asked to give.
